Colin Kaepernick has been named GQ’s Magazine “Citizen of the Year” for 2017. This is not Colin Kaepernick’s first time making the cover of the GQ Magazine. Four years ago he was an upcoming quarterback in the NF.
I’m sure that Kaepernick had no idea that his simple choice of kneeling during the National Anthem would cause not only havoc and heated conversations among NFL fans and the league itself, but also his job. Colin Kaepernick’s courageous move to speak out against brutality and racism has transformed him from a NFL quarterback to a brother to be reckoned with.
Kaepernick is GQ’s Citizen of the Year and for good reason. 2016 the NFL star went against the grain and became the first person to kneel during the National Anthem. This has caused a firestorm of controversy. Now other NFL players have followed suit by during the same. These silent, but strong protests have driven President Donald Trump to speak out against those NFL players choosing to do so. The president has even gone a further step calling for the NFL to make it a ruling forcing players to stand during the National Anthem. This has only driven more NFL players to kneel also. This has also led others to do the same. Take for instance, a group of Pennsylvania high school cheerleaders’ decisions to protest the National Anthem during a visit from military veterans forced the school to alter its homecoming game plans.
The former San Francisco 49er Kaepernick is GQ’s citizen of the year and is reported to have filed a grievance against the NFL. According to ABC his attorney the league’s owners deprived Kaepernick of his employment rights in retaliation for his protest against racial injustice.
On a lighter no note Kaepernick has signed a book deal, reportedly worth more than $1 million. Hopefully, we can gain a indepth look at the man who is making history.
